TECHNIQUE, FLOW, AND PRESENCE

In Contact Improvisation we seek to inhabit a state of maximum availability and presence—a continuous flow where mind and body merge with the dance. In this class we will explore how technical principles are not constraints but anchors that allow us to remain in this state of grace, regardless of the unexpected turns of improvisation, even when the dance becomes complex or challenging. The aim is to understand and integrate specific pathways in order to gain freedom and maintain this “state” of receptivity and play. When we feel technically prepared—when we trust our ability to resolve any situation that may arise in the dance—our mind can relax and surrender fully to the present moment.

SERGIO PALOMARES VICENTE

Lately I am increasingly interested in exploring the subtle and the small, in studying and training attention and its relationship to intention. I am interested in observing how the different dynamics and characters that arise in each gesture and each dance rest upon certain psychophysical states; this is the starting point from which to explore “technique” in CI, always in service of improvisation. In my classes I like to propose images and metaphors that awaken the imagination to support the exploration and practice of specific technical principles. During sessions I aim to guide the group through a dramaturgy, experiencing and moving through different states, awakening patterns and preparing the body and attention for dance—in encounter with oneself, with gravity, and with others. How to find the greatest softness in the most extreme, the greatest presence in the smallest.
